Torment

Post by Tim »

Luk 16:28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

Torment = G931 = basanos = Perhaps remotely from the same as G939 (through the notion of going to the bottom); a touch stone, that is, (by analogy) torture: - torment.

Basanos - Judicial Torture in Ancient Greece

Basanos means torture or “touchstone”.
This word originally referred to a dark-colored stone that was used to test the purity of gold.
Later, the use of torture as a legal technique of truth-seeking was named after the stone

It is interesting to note the overlap of torment with revealing truth. It may be that those in Hades experience the discomfort of truth from which there is no escape.

Continuing with a word that has association with coinage is the word reprobate. This word occurs four times in the bible and is a translation of the Greek word adokimos. The Greek word means worthless, false, or un-approved and is also translated rejected and castaway. This word would find significant usage for coins or other metals that were proven to be false or worthless.

This can shed some light on an interesting passage;

Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Rom 1:31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
